The Living Line is a site-specific commission by East London-based illustrator Somang Lee. It visualises the plants, birds and insects that can be discovered along the route of The Line, encouraging people to explore the wealth of wildlife in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and along the waterways.

The project was commissioned by The Line.

DEAR NATURE AT BRIGHTON FESTIVAL

My film ‘Dear Nature’ commissioned by Artist John Newling will be showing at Brighton Festival 2021. More information and tickets can be found here.

‘Eighty-one letters written over 81 consecutive days. Letters that confront our ongoing relationship with Nature; letters that question, confess and address. Socially engaged artist John Newling’s letters to Nature form a poetic manifesto for our relationship with the natural world. Part impassioned plea, part exercise in truth and reconciliation, they are written frankly and intimately as if to a loved-one, attempting to forge a closer, more fruitful relationship.

Now, in a thought-provoking co-commission by Brighton Festival, composers Sally Beamish and Lisa Heute have linked a selection of these letters using a series of pieces for solo cello.  The letters, read by members of John’s community, are juxtaposed with Reece Straw’s mesmerising images of nature and live performance of the new solo cello works. An appeal for a new state of mind for the future, rooted in hope, balance and respect.’

Saziso is a Cultural Producer and Curator, working independently and in partnership with organisations and individuals. She entered the arts as a teenager through a programme to encourage young people to engage with contemporary art. Dear Nature at IKON Gallery

In 2018 Artist John Newling spent 81 consecutive days writing letters to nature. This culminated into a book entitled ‘Dear Nature’ (Available to purchase here).

After the launch of the book in 2019 John Newling commissioned me to interpret the book into a film for exhibition. The film is a mediative journey through nature guided by the narration of multiple voices reading the letters from the book.

The film will be launched at Newling’s new major exhibition ‘Dear Nature’ at IKON Gallery Birmingham 4th March — 6th September 2020.

More on the exhibition can be found here.

HASSAN HAJJAJ - EVERYDAY SUPERSTARS

‘Everyday Superstars’ is a documentary film commissioned by New Art Exchange recording the process of Artist Hassan Hajjaj photographing Nadia Latoya, who was nominated by the community as a local ‘superstar’.

‘We take you behind the scenes in this short documentary about our Nottingham-centric commissioned portrait by Hassan Hajjaj…

Our Everyday Superstars project invited audiences to nominate extra-special individuals from the city; calling for activists, campaigning for social change, supporters of young people, individuals who have accomplished in the face of adversity, or simply who have amazing talents worthy of recognition.

The nominations were made and Nadia Latoya was announced as our winner. Nadia was styled and photographed by Hassan Hajjaj and now her portrait hangs in the gallery alongside Hajjaj’s other Rock Stars as part of the exhibition The Path which showcases colour, community & culture and creativity.’
